Originally from Laurel, Mississippi, Michelle Lang has been residing in the Pacific Northwest for over 20 years. As the daughter of a teenage mom who graduated college in two years and an industrious father who never met a stranger on his journey of artistic pursuits, it’s no wonder that Michelle has developed into the person that she is today. Currently, she serves as the Lead Youth Ministry at Church By the Side of the Road
In 1995 Michelle heard and answered of God to “use your talents now”. She accepted a position at Emerald City Outreach Ministries and for 6 years served as the Director of Youth Outreach and Leadership. As Director she used her background in theater to launch her first fusion of youth ministry and the performing arts called Heart & Soul Productions – an all teen theater company. The goal of HSP was simple – “get urban kids to read and study the Bible by guaranteeing them the opportunity to make quality, full-length theatrical productions that are relevant and powerful to them and their audience.” After much success with HSP, Michelle and her team of highly motivated high school students looked to get ahead of the next artistic trend and crafted Stage Café 2000 - an Open-Mic, Hip-Hop and Creative Expression Joint for Seattle’s Urban Youth. This pioneering effort was highlighted as “a safe place for teens...” on the local KOMO TV4 “Good News” program.
Michelle has lent her skill, talent and passion to many community/collaborative efforts including the Seattle Center, Langston Hughes, Rainier Beach and Cleveland High School Theater Arts Programs and many youth conferences and camps around the country (Young Life, Vision Youth, Youth for Christ, Hispanic Ministry Center (LA), Luis Palau Festivals).
After leaving her position as Regional Training Manager for Vision Youth - a World Vision domestic program in which urban youth workers were trained using a curriculum she co-developed from her years of hands-on experience and learning, Michelle returned to her front-line work as youth minister. Simultaneously, Michelle served on-staff at University Presbyterian Church as the Urban Ministry Coordinator for the Intentional Community program and as Youth & Young Adult Minister at Church By The Side of the Road (CBSR). At CBSR, Michelle challenges the youth to “un-compartmentalize their worship” and seek the will and way of God in all areas of their lives. In 2010, Michelle and her CBSR team launched the SlingShot All-City Youth Conference - the only 3-day multi-cultural youth conference of it’s kind birthed in the Pacific Northwest . Michelle is currently the Associate Director of Campus Ministries at Warner Pacific College and a worship leader at Imago Dei Community Church. She is also a writer for the youth reference magazine, Slant33.com .
Michelle’s passionate pastime is serving as front-woman to her band Still Water (MLSW). MLSW is an award-winning contemporary gospel band that travels all over the country performing at camps, conferences, concerts, conventions etc ministering to thousands. They have songs in regular radio rotation and videos on BET, The Gospel Music Channel and the Word Network.
Michelle is a highly sought after speaker and worship leader for schools, camps and conferences. She received her BA in Psychology (Organizational Development & Behavior) in 2004 from Seattle Pacific University and is currently working on her Masters in Religion at Multnomah University.
